A heartfelt and gripping picture book story for younger readers about a little Bowerbird called Bert, as he tries to woo a bride called Nanette.

He has built a lovely tall bower with twigs, moss, dirt and tries tempts her with the pretty purple flower inviting her inside his home. Nanette takes one look and makes it known she is unimpressed.

So Bert searches for other things that may tempt her such as a snail shell, a silver bell and a wrapper left over from a caramel. But no, that's not sufficiently tempting when he invites her into his home a second time.

The illustrations compliment the story perfectly, the expressions on both birds quaintly visualised and there is plenty for readers to look at it and pinpoint objects.  Meanwhile Bert repeatedly tries to tempt snooty Nanette with shiny objects like paper clips, a marble, a mobile phone, a fir cone, a green pea, a strawberry and more it sees that no matter what Bert does, it is never good enough.

This story illustrates the importance of persistence and not giving up and also knowing when to stop trying to please a bird who will just not be impressed regardless of what he does.

His so-called friend another bird, Claude has seen how this hasn't worked and so he tells him where he thinks he will find just what he needs, but this is a red herring. Bert takes directions to fly past the gum trees, the tea trees, the peach and Turnipwood.

Far from being a sad story, there is quite a lot to take from it with a heartwarming end when Bert meets Jean who is the loveliest kind and appreciative bird.

This a substantial 32 page picture book, beautifully produced with a linen style cover. An ideal gift for ages 3+.
