A Mandarin Counting Book

by Ying-Hwa Hu

ISBN  9780702266072

As Mia and her Uncle Eddie walk to their favourite restaurant in Chinatown they spot and count all the interesting things.

It is a fun way for little Mia to learn to count in Mandarin and English as she she sees the panda, the stone lions, the turtles, trees and even her neighbours who are practising Tai Chi Chuan.

Charmingly illustrated with engaging pictures, each spread includes a graphic with the number in Mandarin characters with it's phonetic pronunciation in Western characters and the English translation.

Once Mia and Uncle Eddie reach The Big Wok restaurant they need to place their order for dim sum as Mia counts out the number of each variety they've ordered.

Combining the gentle yet colourful pictures with a sweet story makes it easier to understand and put into a subtle learning perspective.

There is also an illustrated glossary under the Author's Note explaining the various items used for learning to count in this book and a page repeating the numbers in Mandarin and English using the same graphic from each page.

It is a lovely hard backed picture book that could be helpful not only for Mandarin speakers but anyone who would like to learn cross-culturally.
