For ages 12+

Beginning with the history of the game this informative book explains how not only soccer (or football - depending on where you from) began, how the association was formed and when women started playing.

Did you know that one of the first women's teams played in 1903 in Sydney? Surprising, but then read how other teams popped in other parts of the country.

Back in 1921 10,000 rousing cheering people  turned up to watch a game in Brisbane and yet in 1922 the story explains the game was deemed unsuitable for women to play.

It would take another fifty years for the First National Women's Soccer Championships to be held in Sydney, but we continue reading about the birth of the Matildas and their development.

It is surprising to read that in 2015 the Matildas were still fighting to be taken seriously, earning less than the mens team, with some players having to take on second and third jobs, not having sufficient training facilities. This history is filled with many more interesting stories and facts.

Do you know about the ParaMatildas? It heartening to read about the ParaMatildas who play CP football, a modified version of the game and what they're doing to encourage women with disabilities to play and get involved with sport at all levels with comments from  CP players.

If you are following the 2022 Matildas team find out where the team members are from, what their jersey number is and what position they play, how many games they have played and more.

Interspersed throughout the book there are Spotlights in which we discover more about team members  highlighting international achievements and the all important coaches. Find out how they prepare for international matches and the training programs.

The hand drawn black and white illustrations all through the book making it enjoyable to read and relate to visually. If your daughter, niece, grand daughter, aunt is interested in playing international soccer there is a whole section on the pathways to becoming a Matilda.

An inspiring book for girls who play or want to play soccer and those who aspire to become one of the Matildas. It is heartwarming to read about the camaraderie between players and their excitement, determination and dedication especially  the honour roll of players who have achieved 100 appearances.
