Odder is a beautifully illustrated story that is inspired a true story of two orphaned otter pups and how they were saved by the program at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California.
The gentle story begins as new pup Odder is born and talks about snuggling into mum asking questions, dreaming and how shows how she keeps her pup safe while she goes out hunting for food. But something happens and Odder is no longer safe in the ocean..
Something wonderful happens as these big paws rescues her and so Odder tells the story of the rehabilitation and preparation to go return to the ocean. The descriptions of the humans from an otter's perspective is quite sweet especially as Odder which is the name the rescue people gave her is warm and comforting,
The story goes onto tell what happens when Odder returns to the sea and one day is bitten by a great white shark, but fortunately escapes and is found once more by the caring people at the rescue centre who decide with this injury she cannot safely go back to open seas. Another young pup arrives and now it is Odder's turn to teach the young one about life there and how to play and revive.
Through the kind and loving story readers will learn about looking after injured animals and these wonderful rescue services and the people who look after their charges. It is a delightful book for ages 6-10. Included is the otter's story at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the work they do.
