Bird in the Herd

Moonboy

by Anna Ciddor

Published by Allen & Unwin
ISBN  9781761180743

Let's go travelling back to 1969 with Letty when she meets a boy called Keith in this exciting time travellling story.

Except this boy who says his name is Keith Arthur Watson and is suddenly standing in her bedroom shocks her. How can this be? Of course doesn't believe him, because that's her grandpa's name. Then she looks around and wonders how did her room change so much, it doesn't look like her room now.

Before Letty, or actually Charlotte new it, she was back in 1969 and meeting Keith's mum and staying to tea. Yet, just a few days ago Letty was with her mum visiting her grandpa in his care home who didn't have much to say to her and she didn't really want to be there.

Back to the story, she asks Keith why he says his name is Moonboy and perhaps it wasn't the answer she was expecting but it seemed quite normal for his friends and family to call him Moonboy, not Keith. Letty enjoys finding out about the first astronauts and the trips to the moon, but she wonders chaining eras like this could she possibly change history?

This is a throughly enjoyable, well written story for 8 - 13 year olds, giving a new perspective and respect to her grandparent and history while having oodles of fun along the way / years.

The author

Anna Ciddor has been fascinated by the past for as long as she can remember. Even as a child, she spent hours immersing herself in research, digging out the tiniest details so she could imagine being a person living in the olden days. As an adult she has successfully turned this passion into a career, but nowadays, she is just as likely to mine for details in her own childhood, creating stories out of the strange, intriguing and totally different world of the 1960s! Anna's work has won her many accolades, including the Nance Donkin Award for Children's Literature, a grant from the Australia Council, Notable Book awards from the Children's Book Council of Australia.
