As Thao, pronounced "towel without the l" as he tells his new friends, he hears the words, go back to where you came from. That surprised him, after the long hot journey relocating from the city to a remote country town.
As we soon read, the "go back to where you came from" are actually directions for Thao's dad to turn the car around so they can find their new home. They soon find she is really friendly and after taking her bet for enjoying free milkshakes for a year, because she knows what she's talking about, Thao's dad says they would all like to have a milkshake anyway. She makes their milkshakes but refuses to take payment as she says it's her welcome to the town.
Thao is concerned about being the new boy at school but his fears are soon allayed when he meets Isaac and his twin sister at the small two teacher school. For a while Thao is somewhat of a novelty - a city boy who has come to live in their small town. Until another new boy, Kadir, arrives at the school. Kadir's mum strived to bring her family to live in peace and safety from their war torn home. Suddenly Thao isn't the novelty but a friendship soon develops.
The story brings in cultural diversity, friendship, heartbreak, and humour and happiness through they eyes and minds of children. It is a good, fun read and well written by well-known Thai- Australian writer Oliver Phommavanh, who was a primary school teacher and now spends his time writing and sharing his writing passion with kids and engaging them with humour.He's also a stand-up comedian and has appeared on national TV and radio as well as a number of well-known comedy venues such as the Comedy Store in Sydney. His first book for upper primary, Thai-riffic!, was published to critical acclaim and he has written a further seven books.
