The Science of Hope

Eye to Eye with our World's Wildlife
by Dr Wiebke Finkler and Scott Davis
Published by Exisle Publishing
ISBN 9781925820645

What an outstanding book! A visual feast of nature's beings. See breathtaking photos of whales and read about their habits; different breeds of penguins in varying locations; seals and sea lions, polar bears, grizzly bears, otters, great white sharks, mountain gorillas and many more.

The information and descriptions by Dr Wiebke Finkler, a filmmaker and story teller who began her career as a marine biologist are so interesting, especially reading about the conservation projects and the hope for the future.

Scott Davis is a wildlife researcher, international photography expedition leader and professional assignment photographer who specialises in wildlife, travel and documentary imagery. He too originally trained as a marine biologist and has worked for National Geographic, the BBC and Animal Planet.

As each category focuses on one type of animal or mammal at a time it is easy to pick up this book and read various individual sections.

Travel around the globe to Mexico, the Falkland Islands, The Dominican Republic, New Zealand, Alaska, Africa, Australia... as you read the hope and strategies for conservation. Case studies are included such as Reteti Elephant Sanctuary and how it helps the local community. There are interviews with the people who work at this sanctuary and other sanctuaries around the world.

We particularly love the double page spread photos of the elephants in Kenya, the majestic giraffes of The Serengetti and incredible images of the whales and of course that sea lion.

Likewise, the informative interviews with a conservation geneticist in Nepal and the gorgeous photography of kangaroos with in-depth descriptions of the animals.

In summary, I highly recommend purchasing this book to have for your own interest, as a reference book for your library and as a gift for others who appreciate and are interested in the conservation of our natural world. It has a permanent spot on our coffee table.
