I Am Lupe

by Sela Ahosivi-Atiola and Yani Augustina

Published by Lothian Childrens Books (Hachette Australia)

ISBN  9780734422538

When little Lupe goes to school she realises that she looks different, the colour of her skin is different, her is different, but why she wonders?

Written with empathy a story told through the eyes and feelings of little girl Lupe.

Lupe tells the reader that she knows she looks different and that she wasn't born in Australia like all the other kids in her class. Her description of where she was born sounds quite idyllic and she says, it's the first place to see the sun everyday.

The other children ask her questions, where she comes from, they're curious as to why Lupe looks different to them, but she's not sure how to answer all these curious questions.

One day Lupe asks her mum, "what am I?" Naturally her mum wonders what she means and of course Lupe explains her concerns and bewilderment because she looks different to the other kids. Mum fortunately has the answers and says not everyone can be the same with examples of her being a big sister, someone who likes to be helpful, fearless, funny and more. Now she understands and feels more confident about who she is.

I am Lupe is a heartwarming picture book story with lovely illustrations that will inspire readers to understand, gain confidence and embrace who they are while also giving readers a sense of what it's like for their friends from other cultures.

You will find it here Island Girl to Airline Pilot. These two books would make a good pairing and ideal for gifts.
