The Sea in Me

By Cody Simpson with Jess Black

Illustrated by Amandine Thomas

Our lives can be busy, too busy for younger children too. Using his love of swimming, international athlete, musician and writer, Cody Simpson has created a calming story, centred around swimming and

a busy beach.. A beach that is packed on a hot summer's day, so crowded that people's towels are almost touching, toddlers misbehaving, teenagers enjoying themselves with their  doof-doof music blaring loudly,, the noise of the ice cream seller and other activities. All this visual and sound noise becomes overwhelming.

Turning to what he loves, the swimmer takes younger readers, about 5 - 9+ years along the story of where he finds peace and enjoys the calming effect of nature. Jumping off the jetty he swims out and allows the water to soothe his mind, while seeing nature abound in the seaweed, fish and more.As the loud noises are dampene within moments our swimmer is enjoying this peace and the soothing and rhythm of the gentle waves.

Returning to the beach, he find his towel, gives it a shake and feeling refreshed and renewed faces the beautiful sea. The surrounding busyess not bothering him at all.

Armandine Thomas' illustrations using calming tones that depict a brilliant summer's day are delightful. They compliment a gentle, guiding and restorative story. This picture book is ideal to bring out when younger ones maybe feeling a little overwhelmed - it also has a calming effect for the adults!
