Superheroes for a Day

Written for ages 9 - 13, three autistic friends, Max, Daniel and Nathalie use their unique abilities and their heightened memory and attention to detail, to turn their differences into strengths.

The story is based on the situation that everyone is fed up with learning maths so many times a day at school. Using the three's abilities and strengths, they use their unique and creative ways to save the school from their never ending maths lessons.

The story is told in a way that goes some way to normalise what is usually seen as quirky behaviour by their peer groups.

Faced with the PE teacher's conundrum when the keys are lost to the sports shed which much to everyone's dreading means they may have to sit through another maths lesson, the three friends not only come up with the solution, but in the end they are viewed in another light.  Revered and positive as they become the superheroes for the day.

The story is helpful for others to try and understand why their fellow students with autism react the way they do.

Readers could hopefully use this knowledge to help them to have more empathy and consideration in a classroom or social situation with people like Max, Daniel and Nathalie. One example that helps is the explanation of literal meanings such as not comprehending the commonly used phrase, "no use crying of spilt milk". It is also helpful when these three learn that their school friends respond differently when they ask the right questions.
