Ethel The Penguin

by Ursula Dubosarsky

Illustrated by Christopher Nielsen

Published by Allen & Unwin

Everyone needs an adventurous and fun friend like Ethel the Penguin who comes from Antarctica. Ethel is lively to say the least, free spirited and just loves to have fun.

Ethel is not like her careful thinking friend who is telling the story, but the two get on famously. They also see what happens when Ethel doesn't listen to her father and disappears leaving a note saying that she has gone to the fair. Her mum and dad are quite worried about, but they realise she can't have gone far.

Seeing her high up on the ferris wheel makes them all nervous but Ethel is having a wonderful time. The author captures these moments beautifully as she describes al the fun, games, free spirit and then remorse Ethel has when she realises her parents were so worried. It was surprising to see a rather old and no longer common  usage world in this section.

The illustrations are perfectly suited the story as they capture the moments colourfully in all sense of the meaning. This is a delightful picture book for ages 3 - 6 years.
