Walk With Us - Welcome To Country

by Adam Goodes, Ellie Laing
Illustrated by David Hardy
Published by Allen & Unwin
ISBN 9781760526726

Next in the Welcome to Our Country series, Walk With Us is inspired by the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Gentle and friendly it invites readers to find out more about the First Nations Country and where they live. This story takes place on Cammerygal land, which we know as the Northern Beaches of Sydney.

Mum, inspired after hearing Harvey's words of acknowledgement and respect at dinner time to the original custodians of the land, the Cammeraygal people and hearing Harvey singing in the bath one night, they join the walking tour with Uncle Boris at their favourite park.

On Uncle Boris' tour he introduces Harvey and friends to the different plants they see and to be more aware of their natural environment.  They start with singing to the ancestors and feeling the warming rays of the sun as Uncle Boris explains what this means. They learn about the  healing plants which mum thinks would be good to have in their backyard. They discover a beautiful waterfall which Uncle Boris explains that the ancestor aways knew where to find water. Harvey spots a particular tree which Uncle Boris tells them is one that was used to make a canoe by his ancestors. They gaze out across the bay and spot Manly or originally called Garangal as Uncle Boris tells the small group about the area.

Walk With Us is a delightfully told story with complimenting illustrations to introduce young children to First Nations land, beliefs and world,  a different view to what we usually see, encouraging a better understanding. This series seem to improve with each new book. complimenting one another.. It would be worth collecting the series.
