The Little French Bridal Shop

by Jennifer Dupee
Published by Allen and Unwin
ISBN 978160879129

Set in the United States, Larisa Pearl returns to her small seaside home town to manage her maiden great-aunt Ursula's estate.

While living in her great-aunt's beautiful home Elmhurst, she rekindles friendships from her youth, especially with Jack Merrill who has maintained the large Elmhurst property since his late teens. Later on she discovers a big surprise when part of her great-aunt's life is revealed.

Larisa has lost her prestigious job with Sothebys and returning to life in the small town isn't quite as simple as it seems. One day as she walks to the shops she passes The Little French Bridal Shop.

Tempted by the beautiful dresses in the window, she steps inside even though she doesn't have plans to marry. So begins a tale of lies, multiple lies that quickly become a whirlpool of lies. She sets a date, makes floral arrangements and even has a Rolls Royce arranged for the big day, but there's no groom!

Eventually Larisa sees the error of her lying ways thanks to her parents relationship. Her kindly father is devoted to her mother who has rapidly advancing dementia and Larisa learns how to cope with the situation that initially she was so reluctant to deal with. Can this eventually influence her to stop all the lies and open her heart to finding love?

The novel is a light capricious look at life's twists and turns, choices and consequences, people and sometimes crazy mixed up relationships. The use of slang in places seems unnecessary. Parts of the story tends go off in tangents when least expected. Summarising, The Little French Bridal Shop is a pleasant lockdown read.

This is a debut novel by Jennifer Dupee who is a graduate of Brown University, where she received er honours degree in creative writing. She is currently working on her next novel.
